Erzgebirgscup

Large numbers of volunteers have shown up to help clean up the property, and the arboretum was able to have a partial reopening seven weeks after the storm, though the woodland trails are still closed. As with most nature centers this year, the Iowa Arboretum has been especially important as a refuge for social distancing, and with the help of the GCA’s grant, the organization will be able to move forward with replanting. The GCA established the Restoration Initiative in 2017 in response to the urgent needs caused by catastrophic storms, hurricanes, floods, fires, and mudslides to assist member clubs involved in public landscape restoration and conservation projects. Eleven grants, totaling $110,000, have been awarded to clubs in California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Ohio, Oregon, Tennessee, and Texas. https://www.gcamerica.org/ Members of The Westport Garden Club (WGC) took advantage of a beautiful fall day to participate in seed gathering at Jerry Smith Park, the largest remaining tract of remnant prairie on the Missouri side of Kansas City. The day’s bounty included seeds from American Germander, Little Bluestem, Rattlesnake Master, and more. Jerry Smith Prairie Park is a remnant of an original American landscape – tallgrass prairie. At least fifteen million acres of Missouri, covering more than a third of the state, were prairie at the time of European settlement. Bison, elk, greater prairie-chickens, and many other animals roamed across these grasslands. With abundant wildlife and up to 800 different kinds of grasses, wildflowers, and other plants, prairie is one of the most biologically rich ecosystems on Earth.

The Garden Club of Allegheny County (GCAC), is “Talking Trash” to Pittsburgh, PA organizations that have the power to solve the problems caused by the profusion of consumables that pollute land and water. In partnership with Allegheny CleanWays (AC) , eighteen members of GCAC sorted, measured, and catalogued some 6,900 pounds of trash collected from several riverfront and illegal dumpsites. Allegheny CleanWays is using the audit findings to educate the public, and to put pressure on companies, government entities, and NGO’s to make positive environmental changes. In addition, GCAC backed-up its labor with a $10,000 grant to Allegheny CleanWays. https://www.gcamerica.org/ In a parking lot on a crisp fall day, GCAC volunteers hand-sorted the contents of a dumpster and dozens of trash bags of paper, food wrapping, textiles, furniture scraps, and other discarded items—more than 11,000 separate pieces of trash—much of it rusty, sharp, or toxic. AC staff then weighed and analyzed the trash. This audit was the first of its kind in the Pittsburgh area. Garden Club of Allegheny County members will continue to be active with Trash Audit and other conservation programs in its community. As the GCAC project leader says: “As challenging as the trash audit was, now being able to talk specifics about the trash was worth the effort!”

On August 10, a derecho storm producing extremely destructive, 100 mph straight-line winds ripped across Iowa. Within its path was the Iowa Arboretum. The storm twisted, shredded, and uprooted more than 200 of the arboretum’s trees. Responding to a Restoration Initiative grant request from the Des Moines Founders Garden Club, The Garden Club of America has awarded $10,000 to support the cost of replanting many of the trees lost to the storm. Mark Schneider, executive director of the Iowa Arboretum, was working on site when the storm hit. Stepping outside once the storm passed, he described the scene as "heartbreaking." Of the more than 200 trees badly damaged in the storm, 133 of them would require removal. Many of these trees were valuable showcase trees that had taken forty to fifty years to grow, and were beloved by the arboretum’s members. https://www.gcamerica.org/ Large numbers of volunteers have shown up to help clean up the property, and the arboretum was able to have a partial reopening seven weeks after the storm, though the woodland trails are still closed. There has been a long and fruitful history between The Portland Garden Club (PGC) and the seed bank. In 1938, Rae Selling Berry created a garden at her home with special interest in rhododendrons, primulas, and alpines. In 1964, PGC successfully nominated Mrs. Berry for the GCA’s Florens DeBevoise Medal, citing her remarkable knowledge of these plants and her fearlessness and success in growing a garden of unusual species. After Mrs. Berry passed away in 1976, The Friends of the Berry Garden, with major support from PGC, purchased the five-acre estate, establishing the garden as a not-for-profit institution. The club proposed the garden for a Founders Fund grant in 1979, enabling the construction of the greenhouse that would support the development of rarely encountered special species and Northwest native plants. PGC member Happy Hieronimus and her husband were leaders in these efforts, and Happy stayed active with the garden and the seed bank until she passed away in 2014. https://www.gcamerica.org/ In 2011, the garden property was sold to a private individual, but the garden’s legacy continues through the Rae Selling Berry Seed Bank & Plant Conservation Program. “Without the support of The Portland Garden Club members, such as Happy Hieronimus, the Seed Bank would not have been so successful through the years in achieving its mission of conserving the genetic resources of Oregon’s native plants for current and future generations,” said acting director Kris Freitag. Since its founding in 1934, ninety Founders Fund winners and runners-up have received more than $1.5 million to save thousands of acres of land and innumerable trees, to restore historic landmarks, to establish civic plantings, and to conduct research and educational projects across the country. While the amount of the award may have changed from the original award of $700 to $30,000, the intent remains the same.

In 2020, wildfires destroyed 86,000 acres on the San Francisco Peninsula, including Big Basin Redwoods State Park, California’s oldest state park. The highlight of this 18,000 acre preserve is the 4,300 acre grove of old-growth redwoods—by far the largest remaining continuous stand of Coast redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) in existence south of San Francisco. The fires burned through ninety-seven percent of the park, destroying trees, shrubs, undergrowth, wildlife, trails, bridges, and the park’s historic 102-year-old lodge, which had served as a welcome center for thousands of visitors every year. In an effort to help reopen the park, The Garden Club of America has awarded a $10,000 Restoration Initiative grant to Woodside-Atherton Garden Club. Partnering with Save The Redwoods League, the club will use grant funds in conjunction with the current renovation of the Rancho Del Oso Nature and History Center. The welcome center will serve as the only entrance into the old growth forest. https://www.gcamerica.org/ At Big Basin, the Woodside-Atherton Garden Club will work with Save the Redwoods League (STRL) and the five fellow Bay Area GCA clubs to spearhead the replanting of natural areas around the welcome center. Additionally, they will create native plant informational beds. Both of these areas will help visitors understand the ecosystem of the old growth forest just before heading into the ancient grove. The effort continues a collaboration with STRL that extends ninety years. In 1931, the GCA first forged a working partnership with STRL to purchase and permanently protect the 2,552-acre Garden Club of America Grove in Humboldt Redwoods State Park. Now covering more than 5,100 acres, the GCA Grove is the third-largest dedicated grove in the entire state park system. The “Bridge the Gap” campaign, completed in 2015, raised funds to complete trail and bridge repairs at the GCA Grove. In 2018, the GCA recognized STRL with the Elizabeth Craig Weaver Proctor Medal.
